Cover Crop Galore

I met with a local seed source and formulated a cover crop mix that would create a diverse seed mix. Each seed type has a set of specific purposes that will hopefully enrich this dirt with compost and maybe I will start to see signs of life happening. I’m starting to be able to identify which seedling is which by their leaves. Each of the seed types “should” winter kill on their own.

Here’s the mix I am trying out:

  • Field Radish - nitrogen scavenger, chokes out some of the weeds, builds organic matter in the soil as it degrades and acts as a natural aerator

  • Field Peas - nitrogen fixer in the soil and is good for beneficial insects

  • Buckwheat - helps with weed suppression and is good for beneficial insects

  • Spring oats - nitrogen scavenger, chokes out weeds and helps with erosion control
